Before you go....do your research

Traveling is one of life’s most fulfilling experiences. During your trip, you get to learn about other cultures, languages, and places. You get to connect with people from all over the globe. Every time I travel I always learn something new about myself and others. If you don’t have the luxury of time to stay in one spot long-term, try researching before you go (even if it’s on the airplane on the way to your destination).

You may want to know what attractions you want to see, where to stay, or even which currency exchange rate offers the best deal. Whether your next getaway is still in the planning stages or while you’re on your way to your destination, researching for your upcoming trip can be very beneficial.

Below are some helpful tips on how or what to research before traveling so that you can have an easy and stress-free journey.

Figure out your budget and what you can afford to spend

First, you want to buy your tickets. Whether that is flying, taking a boat, renting a car, purchase your tickets on how you plan on arriving. Next, find a hotel/hostel that accommodates your budget.

Decide where you want to go and what you want to see/do

I always found it extremely helpful to visit tourism websites that represent that city/country. Try visiting the tourism website and see what events are happening at the same time you plan for your trip.

Plan your route - make sure to include major attractions and transportation

Unless you are a full-time digital nomad (I wish :-), you want to make sure you spend every time wisely during your trip; especially if it is a short one. Have an itinerary. You don’t have to stick to it if something else comes up, but it is always good to have some things mapped out.

Gather information about your destination - learn about culture, history, food, etc.

There are a lot of websites that can be helpful to share important information about the place you plan to visit. As I mentioned above, tourism websites are my go-to. You can also research Lonely Planet, National Geographic, BBC Travel, and other travel forums like Trip Advisor that will help guide you along the way.

Pack lightly and efficiently so you don't have to carry too much luggage

Do you have three pairs of shoes you want to take with you? Maybe pick two. Wear comfortable shoes at the airport and then pack the other pair. I will be sharing my packing list in the next blog post.

Check to see what kind of vaccines are required for the country you plan to visit

The best websites to visit to make sure you have all the vaccines needed are State Travel Department and the CDC websites.

Bon Voyage

Having the right information and knowledge of a place before investing in a trip can make all the difference in how enjoyable it is. Researching prior to arriving allows you to get the most out of your experience without any surprises. From applying for visas to learning popular phrases, researching ensures that your trip is both informed and well-prepared.
